Couchsurfing Hangouts in Hanoi

Being an early 80’s baby allowed me a childhood away from the cell phone and social media revolution! Back were the days we memorized our best friend’s six-digit telephone numbers, simply because we didn’t had a way to store them on phones. Talking face to face was the primary mode of communication. Instead of staying in and playing video games or sitting on our phones, we chose outdoor activities. Our world has evolved tremendously since then – nothing is like it once was. We are witnessing the extent technology is limiting human interactions by pulling us away from face-to-face conversations and burying is in our cell phones.

But hey, the Hangouts feature on the Couchsurfing app works pretty much the opposite – enabling travelers to expand their travel experiences by meeting up with locals and fellow travelers, organizing adventures and road trips. And when not traveling, users can also make use of the feature to find new friends and join activities in their hometown.

What’s so special about the Hangouts feature?

I honestly didn’t understand how it worked, until I first used it during my Hanoi trip last year. Here’s the screenshot of the log from the app:

From an hours-long chat getting to know everyone at Pateta to munching kebabs around the street corner, all of us had a wild night in Hanoi.
